Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to

  • understand questions of building constructions well as the origin of the technical solutions in use and examine their relevance for one's own architectural practice
  • understand various complex interactions between the architectural concept, the desire for expression, their relationship with different methodologies and techniques of construction as well as technological developments, material properties and building physics requirements
  • access an ongoing open archive of constructural references, analogies and ambivalences between different forms of construction
  • illustrate building constructions in various forms and to sucessfully communicate differernt levels of constructural information

Subject of course

From Building Concept to Building Construction

c. s.

Teaching methods

  • architectural constructions drawings done by hand bring togther diffrent types of perception: they merge the technical with the artistic perception and at the same time they provide confidence in one´s own independent working process
  • experiencing different qualities of constructional drawings: rough construction sketches during the lectures, as opposed to detailed construction drawings
  • The discussion of case studies during the lectures and on basis of sketchbooks

Changes in the LVA due to the corona pandemic (as of September 30, 2020)

Due to your safety during the corona pandemic, this year the lecture will only take place ONLINE as a flipped learning mode.

That means:

The lectures are uploaded to TUWEL as videos once a week on Wednesday.
In addition, you have the opportunity to ask questions about the individual lectures in weekly zoom sessions and to discuss your sketches.
Break-out rooms: discussions in small groups

1) Lecture: The new lecture is uploaded to TUWEL as a video every Wednesday at 1 p.m.

2) Zoom Sessions:
After you have listened to and sketched the lecture, a ZOOM session will take place every Tuesday from 6:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. in the following week. There we give you the opportunity to ask content-related questions about the respective lecture and to exchange ideas about your construction drawings.

REGISTRATION

In order to have access to the TUWEL course, you must be registered for the current course in WS 2020.
You will receive the invitations for the Zoom events in the TUWEL course.

IMPORTANT: YOUR PREPARATION FOR THE ZOOM SESSIONS V1-V8:

Listen to the respective lecture every week
Sketch constructions "quickly" and "slowly"
Use the week to sketch the constructions of the respective lecture. Research the qualities of the respective drawing speed in different media in order to establish this as a craft for your personal practice.
We recommend keeping a sketchbook in A4 or A3 format.
Collect questions ...
Digitized sketchbook
Take photos of your construction sketches so that you can present and discuss them during the zoom session.
(Please no scans in order to avoid quality loss)
Send your questions and sketches as a collected PDF (max. 20 MB) weekly by Monday 9:00 am at the latest to Philip Kaloumenos: kaloumenos@h1arch.tuwien.ac.at
