The module Cultural Spaces deals with the initiation, coordination and implementation of a research project in architecture. The aim is to simulate a concrete topic that could be implemented.

The VO Analysis of Hypotheses and Processes of Applied Research in Architecture provides an insight into the making of, introducing backgrounds to following topics:

- What means research in architecture?
- What are the topics?
- What is the meaning of keywords, such as:
research in teaching, research-led design, art-based research, design accompanying research, development and appreciation of the arts, pure scientific research in architecture?

Frame:

- Which institutions for project funding exist (at international, national, Vienna, TU-level etc.)?
- How is it possible to find the right calls at the appropriate research funding institutions?

Implementation:
- How to generate a project idea?
- How to formulate a research question?
- How to find the matching funding?
- How to get to partners?

Subject of course

Presentations of representatives of research funding institutions in Austria on national, international and European level.

Workshops and discussions with the aim to create a research idea.

At the end of the semester the students shall be able to draft a topic within the wide field of applied architectural research, which could have chances to be supported through a chosen funding institution.

Outline of a (fictional) research project in form of a one-pager including research question, research approach, potential partners and which kind of funding would be addressed;
