Aim of course

In order to understand the connections between concepts and ideas in architecture, it is necessary to deal with different scenarios of the architectural environment. The aim of the course is to recognise and analyse the different perceptions and interpretations of architecture and built space caused by the respective cultural background. The aim is to raise awareness of evolutionary developments in architecture. This should make it easier, if not possible, to assess the degree of sustainability of future architectural solutions. Basically, two hypotheses are used:

  • The perception and interpretation of architecture and the built environment is indispensably dependent on the cultural background of the observer.
  • Architecture is understood as an international language. But depending on the individual cultural history, this is interpreted in very different ways.

The course offers the opportunity to deal with forms of expression of architectural phenomena and urban spaces in different cultures in order to understand that a building can and must only be understood and designed in connection with its history and environment.
