Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to derive basic theoretical relationships of higher continuum mechanics and thermodynamics and to solve related computational examples. This concerns in particular the topics of power principles and their application in structural mechanics, as well as micromechanically and thermodynamically based material modelling including dissipation processes and large deformations. Furthermore, the students have understood basic concepts of mechanical experimentation including ultrasound and can evaluate and interpret associated experimental protocols.

Subject of course

Principle of virtual powers (PvL); 1. and 2. Law of thermodynamics; entropy, dissipation; heat conduction; thermoelasticity; viscoelastic material models; elastoplasticity; hyper- and hypoelasticity; experimental methods (uniaxial tensile and compression tests, ultrasonic tests); application of PvL in bar theory; Theory of squat bending rods; Meaning and determination of shear coefficients; Fundamentals of micromechanics (multi-scale modelling); Meaning of representative volume elements; Homogenisation of material properties; Treatment of simple micromechanical tasks

Presence lectures on VO and UE content, live-stream and records of the VO and UE; Submission of full-text lecture notes with formulae and numerical exercises

Additional information

The first lecture will take place on Monday, March 4, 2024, from 13:15 to 14:50 in Hörsaal HS 8 Heinz Parkus. The lecture will be held in German.

The course Engineering Mechanics VU consists of a lecture part and an exercise part.
Both parts of the course will be held in presence and will be streamed live from the lecture hall.
A recording of each session will also be made available in the TUWEL course.


In order to successfully complete the lecture, a positive mark must be reached in both parts.

  • The exercise part consists of the exercise sessions, an obligatory visit to the laboratory, a written examination (22 points) and a homework (8 points). A positive mark to the exercise part will be given if at least 50% of the points from the written examination and the homework are attained (i.e., a total of at least 15 points).
  • The lecture part consists of the lecture sessions, and an oral examination. In order to take part in the oral examination, the exercise part must first be completed successfully.
