Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to...

  • having acquired in-depth knowledge of the structure and organization of distributed automation systems
  • recognize current developments in the area of Industrial Internet of Things
  • creating information models as a basis for integrating heterogeneous systems
  • design machine-to-machine communication and auto-management systems

Subject of course

One of the key challenges in adapting current automation technology to new paradigms like the Internet of Things is the intrinsic complexity of current automations systems. The courses in this module deal with connection and integration of different and diverse technology domains (e.g., embedded systems and cloud computing) through unified interfaces based on Internet technology. Different approaches to information and application modeling within the industrial domain are discussed, and the particular challenges of realizing the Industrial Internet of Things are identified. In the hands-on part of the course, proof-of-concept implementations are developed, documented, and presented.

Teaching methods

Contents are presented in lectures and deepened in accompanying exercises by students. Case studies are discussed.
