Aim of course

Basics of applied and theoretical research in  PET (Privacy Enhancing Technology). Practical assignments accompany the lecture.

Subject of course

  • Introduction and motivation for PET
  • Systems for online anonymity (remailer, darknets, P2P, onion routing)
  • The Onion Router (Tor, hidden services, attacks, proper use) 
  • Transport Layer Security (TLS - HTTPS, STARTTLS, PKI, attacks, incidents) 
  • Internet censorship (Great Firewall of China, examples from other countries)
  • Web Privacy (tracking, fingerprinting, browser Add-Ons)
  • Crypto Tools (PGP, OTR, ZRTP, mobile messenger)
  • Algorithmic privacy (guest lecture from Prof. Stefan Katzenbeisser, TU Darmstadt)
