Based on four smaller assignements the understanding of object tracking, virtual reality environments, 3D interaction and networking in distributed virtual environemnts are trained. After this initial training phase a 2 person group project is implemented using 3D space mouse and Microsoft Kinect for 3D input and full body motion capturing.
The initial phase until mid of november trains the understanding of the underlying technology. In this phase, talks are given by the course leaders to understand the theoretical background of the underlying technology. In the second phase (group phase until end of the term) a complex virtual reality application with 3D interaction and full body motion capturing is implemented.
The following 3D input devices are used:
- ARToolkit-Marker (Training phase)
- 3D-SpaceMouse (Group phase)
- Microsoft Kinect for MotionCapturing and gesture control (Group phase)
Mentoring & Support
For help and support during the training phase the TUWEL forum is used. Please ask your questions to the lectures/tutors there. In the group phase, additional help session with the tutors take place.
Grading
For all grading deatils, see indruduction slides (TUWEL).
Software & Hardware
Programming of the assigmenents is based on ARTiFICe - An Augmented Reality Framework for Distributed Collaboration. The VRUE-SDK incl. ARTiFICe is tested on WinXP, Win7 32/64bit and MacOSX with Win7 Bootcamp. The VRUE-SDK is mandatory for the exersice and ONLY works completly on these platforms!!
Hardware
You can use your own workstation for the programming and developing, for all assigments you need a standard webcam (external/built-in). A webcam can be lent for the length of the course (first-come, first-served). For the project phase, you additionally need a SpaceMouse and a Microsoft Kinect. For each group of two, one SpaceMouse and one Kinect is lent. Dates of lending are found in the TUWEL.
25 pre-configured working stations with webcams can be used in Frogger lab. Frogger is reserved for all members of the course at specific days, see calendar in TUWEL. Availability of Frogger on other days can be found here.
Weitere Infos
All information (software, assigments, tutorial slides, calendar with lending dates, Frogger, tutorial dates, help sessions and all deadlines) can be found for course members in TUWEL.
All four assigmnets of the training phase as well as the group project are handed in electronically by uploading in TUWEL. Aditionally, a mandatory interview takes place at the end of the term, discussing the group project.
Only master students can subscribe via TISS.
Bachelor students who will enroll in a master program in winter term 2011/12 are requested to write an e-mail to vrlu@ims.tuwien.ac.at, subject "Anmeldung VRUE2011" containing name, student ID number and program ID number. If free capacities are available after end of the enrollment period we will manually subscribe you to the lab course according to date of mails (first com first served).
The student has to be enrolled for at least one of the studies listed below
