Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to calculate digital surface and terrain After positive completion of the course, students are able to calculate digital surface and terrain models as well as orthophotos based on data from laser scanning and stereo photogrammetry and to analyze and visualize them. Students have knowledge of the basic techniques for acquiring topographic and hydrographic data and can apply different interpolation methods depending on the data situation. They can program simple interpolation approaches themselves and are also able to display and analyze topographic and hydrographic data in GIS programs and assess their quality. The students know how to access nationally and globally available data sets, how to use them and how to apply them as a basis for individual questions in environmental engineering.

Subject of course

  • Categories of topographic and hydrographic information
  • Methods for acquisition of basic topographic and hydrographic data (stereo photogrammetry, airborne laser scanning, terrestrial laser scanning, airborne laser bathymetry, photo bathymetry, echo sounding)
  • Surface interpolation including triangulation, sliding surfaces and kriging
  • Data structures for digital terrain and surface models
  • Surface and terrain models from airborne laser scanning
  • Surface models from stereo photogrammetry incl. orthophoto production
  • Hydrography by means of optical measurement methods (airborne laser bathymetry and multi-media photogrammetry)
  • Hydrography using hydroacoustic measurement methods (echo soundig)

Teaching methods

  • Pre-recorded videos
  • Slide-based live lecture
  • Discussion with students (online and in-calssroom, tutorials )
  • Demonstration of data acquisition methods in the lecture hall or in the courtyard (photogrammetry, laser scanning, total station).
  • Demonstrations (hands-on ) of relevant programs (QGIS, CloadCompare, OPALS)
  • Hands-on excercises to deepen the lecture material
  • Joint analysis of topographic data sets
