Diesel engines emit three times more nitrogen oxides and thousand times more soot particles than a comparable gasoline engine. In Austria every second passenger car runs by a Diesel engine and the traffic of heavy duty Diesel trucks permanently increases. Thus, fine dust particles and nitrogen oxides reach alarming values for human health. According to a statistic of the Austrian Traffic Club (VCÖ) 2400 annual cases of death are indirectly related to diesel exhaust emissions. This is the reason why European Community tightens the exhaust limits periodically. At the present, the automobile industry prepares modern filter technologies in order to fulfill the amendment. One approach aims to transform soot particles into gaseous products by the oxidation with nitrogen oxides and oxygen. In order to optimize such continuous regenerating traps (CRT) the reaction kinetics and the reaction mechanism of the oxidation reactions have to be known. The idea is to start the soot oxidation by the heterogeneous reaction with NO2, and as soon as the temperature is high enough the oxidation with oxygen becomes possible. Therefore, the reaction parameters (composition, concentration, temperature and pressure) are very important to be optimized. Particularly, the temperature might be a problem. On one hand it should be high enough to feed the oxidation and on the other hand it must not be too high since the trap could easily be damaged. A better understanding of the heterogeneous soot reactions will be an important task for the future optimization of continuous regenerated Diesel particulate filters.
