Wiener Linien - "Gefrierversuche und Vereisungskonzeption für die Unterquerung des Donaukanals durch die Station"

01.03.2004 - 30.06.2005
Auftragsforschungsprojekt
In the course of the extension of the underground line U2 between the 1. and the 2. district of Vienna, the underground station Schottenring is built right beneath the Danube channel. In order to avoid settlements in consequence of tunnel excavation, causing damage of surface building on both side of the Danube channel, soil improvement by means of ground freezing will be employed. Hereby, both liquid-nitrogen and brine cooling are considered in order to minimize frost heave during the freezing process. Freezing experiments on the clayey silts and silty sands in this area were performed at the Bautechnische Prüf- und Versuchsanstalt GmbH in 2326 Lanzendorf, Neubaugasse 5, Austria. Hereby, cylindrical soil samples were investigated as regards their strength increase, creep behavior, and frost heave. Within this research project, freezing experiments are performed at the Laboratory of the Institute for Mechanics of Materials and Structures. The experimental program encompasses cooling experiments with different cooling rates as well as freezing/thawing experiments. The expected result will provide insight into the ice-lense formation during freezing of cohesive soil.
