Wearables for Energy-efficient Living and Psychological Fitness with Intervention Tailoring

Due to climate change, temperatures are rising worldwide, leading to extreme overheating, especially in cities. This has a negative impact on sleep quality, health, productivity, and well-being. In addition to technical solutions, behavioral changes, and adaptation strategies play a crucial role in mitigation. In order for broad sections of the population to benefit from innovations, they must be easy to implement and cost-effective.

WELLFIT researches sleep quality, thermal well-being, and productivity using smartwatch-based mobile sensor technology in combination with Ecological Momentary Assessment (EMA). During the project, nudging and Just-in-Time Adaptive Interventions (JITAIs) will be developed and tested together with low-tech and low-cost cooling solutions. Two studies with 100 participants each will be conducted for this purpose. The customized interventions should then positively affect sleep, well-being, and productivity. We plan to provide people with customized information based on objective and subjective data so that they can achieve optimal comfort conditions while reducing energy consumption in buildings. The information is to be sent directly to people's smartwatches and initiate energy-efficient behavior. To do this, we use smartwatches to monitor personal variables such as ECG, skin temperature, etc., and the person's well-being in real time and combine this information with the measured environmental variables (e.g., temperature, humidity). This allows well-informed and customized interventions to be made to maintain health and productivity. Based on this data, AI-based personal comfort models are developed in WELLFIT.




WELLFIT aims to go beyond the international state of the art in health psychology (interventions and their influence on sleep, well-being, and productivity) and in the field of explainable and transfer-learning-based models for personal comfort. Practical guidelines are being developed to make the findings of the WELLFIT project accessible to a broader public.
