Active Packaging for food applications

16.03.2011 - 30.06.2013
Research funding project
Active Packaging for food is becoming a more and more important trend in industry. In any case the aim is to keep a good quality of the food for a longer period of time (i.e. to extend the ¿shelf-life¿ of the products). Several different systems have been tried out since the end of the last century, beginning in Japan, but more and more also in Europe and elsewhere: Ethylen or oxygen scavengers, CO2 ¿ emitters, compounds that remove unwanted substances from the foodstuff itself, and many others. This project focuses on the fabrication of masterbatches with natural antimicrobial additive in the release mechanism, which corresponds to a low-cost alternative for such applications. One of the challenges is that the film for food applications has to remain transparent. Besides studies on the physical properties of the films the migrational behavior of the compounds present in the polymer will be tested as well as the growth of microorganisms coming into contact with the materials.
