Tompgraphy/Diffraction of heterogeneous metals

01.04.2007 - 30.09.2011
Eigenprojekt
The three-dimensional description of heterogeneous materials is elaborated by means of X-ray (XCT), synchrotron (SCT) computed tomography, as well as sectioning by Focussed Ion Beam and imaging by scanning electron microscopy (FIB-SEM). The objects are fiber reinforced polymers, particle, short fiber or continuous fiber reinforced light metals, cellular metals, Al-alloys, grey cast iron and steel castings. The criteria for spatial and elemental resolution will be identified. The architecture of the reinforcing components in composites as well as porosity are investigated. The pores in cellular metals as well as the distribution of the Ti-blowing agent are determined. The Fe-rich inclusions, the distribution of the eutectic Si and of solidified Mg2Si (chinese script) are detected. The graphite particles and their distribution is investigated in grey cast iron, where the connectivity of the shrinkage porosity is revealed as well. Gas pores, oxide inclusions, segregations and primary/secondary precipitates and deformation pores are identified. The resolution limits will be worked out for the different material combinations and 3D-investigation methods at the available length scales (submicron to millimetres). Publications on 3D metallography are envisaged. The submission of a research proposal to FWF is planned.
