Technology for Sustainable Automation of Energy-Systems

01.04.2013 - 30.03.2015
Research funding project

The project is embedded in the HigherKOS program, aiming at research cooperations and networking between research institutions in Austria, Kosovo and the western Balkan region with special attention to young and early stage researchers.

In this project both the awareness for those problems shall be generated as well as the technologies and methods to overcome the associated challenges will be imparted. Especially young scientists from partner countries should learn how to tackle such problems in a systematic way and how to apply state-of-the-art solution methods. A hands-on experience for the participants is planned by conducting surveys on existing and planned technologies in the partner countries, and by a step-by-step procedure of implementing a modern control scheme to a thermal power plant in a simulation.

The project proposal targets to improve the awareness for modern control technologies for efficient implementation and operation of existing and alternative energy sources. On one hand, existing thermal power plants are often not operating in optimal conditions therefore wasting primary energy and generating unnecessary emissions. On the other hand, renewable energy sources are mostly stochastic in nature (wind, sun, water) and therefore require intelligent storage and operation strategies.
