Switched Power Amplifiers for Energy Efficient Wireless Base Stations

01.04.2007 - 31.03.2009
Forschungsförderungsprojekt
The project team will research and develop novel designs and architectural concepts for embedded power amplifiers to be used for 3G and beyond wireless base stations. The technical challenges are to boost the overall power efficiency from 5-10 up to 50-60 percent while maintaining highest linearity. The scientific outcome will dramatically shrink RF Base Station power dissipation, substantially reduce current design envelopes and shelf cubatures, and pave the way for new generations of high power RF devices. The novel knack is to consciously accept the non-linearity of analogue amplifiers, drive their efficiency to the maximum, and measure and feedback the output result to an intelligent digitally controlled predistortion stage in front. Research has to cope with non-linear amplifiers and hysteresic memory effects. The systems proposed will therefore combine high-performance digital signal processing for linearity control together with most advanced mixed-signal technology. Technology studies will include LDMOS; GaN, SiC or GaAs solutions.
