Steel reinforced timber structures for multi storey buildings
01.12.2010 - 31.12.2013
Research funding project
The aim of this ongoing project is to investigate the resistance against lateral loads of a highrise timber building without diagonal bracing. Both vertical and horizontal timber elements are reinforced with flat steel elements. The advantages of such structures are multiple: Concerning constructive and ecological aspects a possible high level of prefabrication and very efficient connection methods can shorten the construction time and make easy disassembling and reuse of material. Concerning static aspects the steel elements can take over tensile forces and act in hybrid with the timber. Concerning dynamic aspects the high flexibility of the structure due to the low weight leads to very low resulting seismic loads. Concerning fire protection the steel members improve the fire resistance of the whole construction. Concerning economical aspects and aspects of building physics the structural bracing elements are working as well as façade elements.
