Spengergasse –internal insulation, changing the hygrothermal conditions in an internally insulated exterior wall by the application of exterior thermal insulation.

12.01.2011 - 31.12.2011
Auftragsforschungsprojekt
The Spengergasse 30-32 residential complex in 1040 Vienna was built in 1972 and constructed with interior insulation according to the original construction plans. The certificate should clarify whether interior insulation actually exists on the exterior wall and how the wall is constructed. Furthermore, the condition of this wall assembly shall be analyzed and the possible damage to the existing building documented. To accurately determine the wall construction, samples were already taken at several points along the outside wall on 11.22.2010. Due to evident glass wool discolouration, the samples were examined in greater detail in a chemical laboratory. Moreover, it will be investigated whether the exterior insulation retrofit will negatively affect the internal conditions in the exterior wall construction by increasing water accumulation. It is especially important to determine the effect of applying insulation to the wall exterior; to verify whether the insulation application increases or decreases the risk of mould growth in the wall construction. The effect will be studied using hygrothermal simulations, and documented using relevant details.
