Roadmap Study for Data Mining

This project aims to carry out a roadmap study of the data-mining[1] field. The MAX ISIS Consortium, consisting of max.recall information systems GmbH and the Institute of Software Technology and Interactive Systems of the Vienna University of Technology is pursuing a three-step approach to elicit, on one hand, the needs in the area in the short, medium and long-term, and the other, to create a recommendation and action plan corresponding to those needs.

Based on a detailed survey of the state-of-the-art in the areas of search and analysis, semantic processing, visualization and cognitive systems, the data-mining field will be categorized and thematically crystalized.

In parallel to the thematic exploration of the area, the initial phase of the study will also create a landscape of the leading national players in research and industry, as well as their skillset in order to establish an Austrian competence landscape.

In the second phase, the data collection phase, we plan three workshops with national research and technology experts from academia and industry. The perspective of the industry and business communities will also be collected using structured interviews with representatives of multinational companies active in Austria, SMEs and selected experts from the national umbrella organizations and special interest groups.

Furthermore, an international Advisory Board consisting of experts from industry and research will be established. The role of the Advisory Board is primarily to validate the recommendations by taking into account international developments and trends in science, research and business.

The information, perspectives and needs elicited in the first two phases will be, in the third phase, consolidated, analysed and summarized in a report. This report will contain the conclusions inferred from the data and a set of recommendations as well as short-, medium-and long-term measures to strengthen innovation in the data-mining field.


[1] Data mining is understood here in its broadest meaning, of extracting actionable information out of unstructured or semi-structured data.
