Resource Efficient Production Route for Rare Earth Magnets

01.12.2014 - 30.11.2017
Forschungsförderungsprojekt

The overall objective of the REProMag Project is to develop and validate a new processing route for hard magnets that allows the production of net-shape magnetic demonstrator parts with complex geometries 100% waste-free.

An innovative manufacturing process for Rare Earth magnets using the metal-injection moulding (MIM) manufacturing route, which is significantly increasing the material efficiency by being completely waste-free along the whole manufacturing chain and so increasing the energy efficiency during production by more than 30% when compared to conventional production routes.
Moreover, the technique has the potential to replace polymer-bonded magnets, which are not only much lower in the achievable energy products (containing less magnetic material) but also very difficult to recycle.
REProMag brings together the leading experts in powder characterisation, materials processing, powder injection mouldingand sintering with a group of innovative SMEs in a multi-disciplinary project able to deliver key advances beyond the state ofthe art in technology for feedstock production, injection moulding of Rare Earth magnetic materials, tooling-, processing- and coating technology resulting in smart demonstrator parts clearly showing the advantages of the REProMag processing route.
