Project preparation - FP7 QuoWaDiS large integrative project - Oct. 2008 to Sept. 2009
01.10.2008 - 30.09.2009
Auftragsforschungsprojekt
QuoWaDiS is planned within FP7 program: The main aim of the project is to model and assess the long-term impacts of climate change on the hydro-chemical, hydrological and ecological processes and dynamics in river basins and associated aquatic ecosystems. The timing and scaling issues not presently addressed in European Water Framework Directive (WFD) and Habitat Directive (HD) would get particular attention. Lead indicators – some of them monitored over decades others new to find – will be used and incorporated into this framework. The project will provide tools to develop three kinds of policies with general applicability over the whole of Europe: a) mitigation policies to avoid the exploitation of additional water resources, b) adaptation policies to cope with greater uncertainty about water availability in a less predictable climate and c) restoration policies to re-establish biodiversity and ecosystem services in aquatic and wetland ecosystems. In total the three policies should lead to a costeffective water and environmental resource management regime that can adapt to uncertainty from sources of global change. The effectiveness of the recent legal regulations related to implementation of WFD and HD and developing suggestions for adjustments, if required, to make them more effective. The project comprises a consortium of 27 European partners. It has six closely related work packages and some 80 work tasks to be solved to answer some of the most urgent questions in relation to long term water management and climate change. The project is planned for four years, starting 2009 and ending in 2013. This ensures a timely integration of the expected findings into applied water management.
