During the past 10 years, Sempermed has developed an operation glove that is crosslinked by using a UV-initiated thiol-ene reaction. Due to the occurrence of an extremely unpleasant smell after radiation sterilization, the glove is not well accepted by the customers despite its revolutionary technological properties. While it is well known that the raw materials used in this product can develop an unpleasant odor, very little is known about their behavior during radiation sterilization.
The aim of this project is therefore to investigate the causes of the malodor depending on the specific materials and process steps and to find conditions (related to the materials, and the process) under which the odor is no longer perceptible after radiation sterilization.
This would be the prerequisite for the product to successfully be placed on the market.
