Diesel Soot Combustion in the Presence of Nitrogen Oxides

01.01.2007 - 31.12.2008
Forschungsförderungsprojekt
The emissions from diesel engines are harmful to both human health and the environment, especially because of their high content of particulate and nitrogen oxides. Diesel engines emit three times more nitrogen oxides and thousand times more soot particles than a comparable gasoline engine. Fine dust particles and nitrogen oxides are serious threats as their emissions have an impact on human health and cause environmental problems. This is the reason why European Community tightens the exhaust limits periodically. The aim of this work is to determine the effect of type of catalyst¿s support and active phase on the catalytic activity in carbon black combustion in the presence of NOx. It is our aim to use as catalysts, materials based on either mixed oxides with perovskite like structure or doped with zirconium. Mechanism and kinetics of the processes on the catalyst-soot-gas phase boundaries will be determined. For these purposes the respective materials will be characterized according to the specific surface area, the phase composition and the surface structure (N2 adsorption, X-Ray Diffraction, Temperature Programmed Desorption ¿ Mass Spectroscopy (TPD-MS), TPD-O2, TP Oxidation -MS, Thermo Gravimetry ¿ Differential Thermal Analysis, determination of acid-base properties, sorption-desorption of NOx and CO2 ¿ detected by DRIFTS and EPR), catalytic activity in soot oxidation in the presence of NOx, and CO + NO. It is foreseen that this study will be done at part with the specialized experimental set-up in every of both laboratories. Dr. Januzs Trawczynski in Wroclaw is an expert on catalysis and catalytic soot combustions, while Dr. Hinrich Grothe in Vienna possesses a large knowledge and experience in studies on mechanism and kinetics of soot oxidation. Both groups have complementary approaches working for the same aim.
