Abstract The research project METRO.FREIGHT.2020 analyses the possibilities of optimal utilisation on still dense rail networks within the metropolitan regions in Austria (Vienna, Linz, Graz, the Rhine Valley). It develops an adapted freight transport concept considering economic, environmental and infrastructure based objectives having a focus on the choice of transport means for shippers with the perspective on coming transport technologies.
