In the LML project the ¿last mile¿ will be defined triply. Firstly passengers must be able to go from the final station (e.g. Railway station, airport) to their destination (e.g. hotel), econdly the other way around (¿first mile¿). Thirdly the local mobility without own cars must be guaranteed. 70% of all car travelers say the reduced mobility at the final destination without an own car is an essential decision criteria not to take public means of transportation for a holiday trip. In order to support the sustainable transport system ¿railway¿ it is essential to close this missing link as well as possible. This is also relevant for tourism because many travelers who don¿t use their car search for destinations with good mobility offer. Regions that can¿t offer suitable systems to satisfy their guest have got disadvantages compared to regions with better mobility offers. The LML project makes use of knowledge of existing systems. They will be analyzed exactly in order to advance a optimized mobility system. This system will allow people living in regions lacking in infrastructure to be mobile without own cars because they will be able to close the link between their home and the next station of public means of transportation. The same counts for touristic regions lacking in infrastructure. Of course the system will allow local mobility. The LML project will develop a general mobility system including a business concept, the advancement of electronic systems for reservation and positioning (e.g. for mobile phones) and a vehicle concept. The developed system will be analyzed regarding to the cost effectiveness and customer¿s satisfaction. The scenario of the mobility system can look like this (e.g. for train rides): The traveler is able to book the connection from the final station to his destination together with booking the train tickets or by using an electronic train schedule information. At the final station he can go to the vehicle, open it with a key-card and go to his destination. There he is able to park the vehicle and to lock out. In the same moment each other person can locate this vehicle by mobile phone, can book it easily and can use it for a ride to the station or anywhere else. The LML project will analyze the technical and economical options of such a system. Additionally the basics for necessary vehicle concepts will be developed.
