International Wigner Workshop 2017
10.03.2017 - 16.06.2017
Forschungsförderungsprojekt
The 2nd International Wigner Workshop (IW
2
) will be held on June 5, 2017 and will be hosted by the 2017 International Workshop on Computational Nanotechnology (IWCN), June 6-9, 2017, Lake District, United Kingdom. IW
2
will be composed of about five to 10 invited speakers and around 15-20 regular research talks. The workshop will bring together leading scientists to translate recent scientific advances in Wigner-based quantum research into new collaborations and novel directions.
The Wigner function was formulated in 1932 by Eugene Wigner and has at this point been studied for more than eight decades. However, in recent times Wigner function-related research experiences renewed and extensive interest in various areas, propelled by many significant advances, ranging from theoretical to modeling and simulation achievements. These advances give rise to a plethora of exciting research opportunities across the science and engineering spectrum, both regarding theoretical and applied aspects. In particular, areas such as quantum optics, quantum information processing, and quantum nanoelectronics benefit greatly from advances in the area of Wigner functions.
To support those astonishing advances and the high pace of research, the Wigner Initiative was founded in 2015, which is the organizer of the IW
2
series. World-leading experts support the effort: The Initiative has currently more than 60 international supporters and is headed by the steering committee composed of Prof. David K. Ferry (Arizona State University, USA), Prof. Irena Knezevic (University of Wisconsin-Madison,
USA), D.Sc. Mihail Nedjalkov (TU Wien, Austria & Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, Bulgaria), Prof. Siegfried Selberherr (TU Wien, Austria), and Dr. Josef Weinbub (TU Wien, Austria).
With the second installment of the highly successful IW
2
, the Wigner Initiative wants to bring the conference to Europe and aims to take it to the next level. The invitation of leading experts is planned, as is the goal of increasing the number of participants. This goal is the reason for pursuing sponsoring funds to make this crucial step a reality.
The long range objective is to create a dedicated and ongoing conference series for Wigner researchers to meet, to exchange ideas, and to establish collaborations. Having a successful second IW
2
in the United Kingdom will go a long way toward establishing that goal. Hence, this second meeting is crucial, as it enables to attract as broad an audience as possible. The Wigner function ¿ and its recent advances ¿ offers new and unexplored application areas, which enhances the need for dissemination within a broad community of physicists and engineers. For this reason, the IWCN has been chosen as the host conference for the second workshop, as it will not only provide excellent exposure in the United Kingdom, Europe and beyond but also will conveniently enable regular IWCN participants ¿ which represent a natural, untapped focus group for Wigner quantum research ¿ to also take part in the workshop. This will potentially multiply the reach of the Wigner Initiative¿s efforts. In addition, this conference is being sponsored by the Institute of Physics, and the subsequent advertising of the workshop will garner a far wider information base than has been achieved so far.
