ISOTEC III - Integrated Organic Sensor and Optoelectronic Technologies (Phase 3)
01.02.2009 - 31.01.2012
Research funding project
Comfortable, wearable sensors and computers will enhance every person¿s awareness of his or her health condition, environment, chemical pollutants, potential hazards, and information of interest. In agriculture and food industry there is a need for continuously monitoring the condition and needs of plants, animals, and farm products. They find use in on-line control of pollutants in air and water, in modern fire control systems, and numerous other applications. Yet there is a significant gap between the availability of small and flexible sensors and the more and more increasing request. The current achievements using organic semiconductors for integrated optoelectronic devices raise the possibility for utilizing this class of materials for modern intelligent integrated sensing systems as shown during the first 4 years of research in the RPC. The regional and national R&D cluster ISOTEC has been established in 2005 with the aim of developing a versatile multianalyte integrated organic sensor. All relevant basic research and R&D expertise as well as industrial companies of the region are united and are focusing on a common goal or are participating in achievements of the consortium. In the 5th call of the Austrian Nanoinitiative, the cluster will change its structure to a large scale BII project with the aim of developing three different devices. In particular an optical organic-based sensor device, an electrical organic-based sensor device and optical interconnects shall be developed up to the demonstrator level. Two virtual work-areas which target tasks which will are relevant for all types of sensors within ISOTEC are designed to contribute to the needs of all partners. Working together for four years all partners in the RPC ISOTEC are now very closely linked with each other having numerous input and output interfaces along the line of the development cycle w.r.t. materials, characterisation techniques, structuring techniques and devices. Based on the first lab-scale achievements, where the IPR is held and saved within the RPC ISOTEC, it is, however, necessary to further develop the existing concepts.
