Integration in Public Space
17.12.2004 - 31.12.2005
Auftragsforschungsprojekt
In presence of increasing problems with socio-economic and socio-cultural differentiation local policy and municipal administration focus their attention on prozesses of social integration, inclusion and exclusion. This trans-disciplinary research project will analyse the potentials of integration in public places and will discover strategies of administrative influences in commission of the Municipal Vienna, MA 18 - Urban Development and Urban Planning. It will be operated by the Sociology of Spatial Planning and Architektur - Department of Spatial development, Infrastructure and Environmental Planning, Vienna University of Technology - in cooperation with the company kon-text. Basing on relational conceptions of space quantitative and qualitative methods will be combined: In a two step research architectural and structural characteristics as well as demographic and socio-spatial attributes will be connected. This strategy of analysis will allow the exploration of the interaction between build and societal spaces. The first step will be the analysis and valuation of 10 selected places in Vienna focussing the functions, significances, the practices of use as well as the effects of the architectural and structural form. As second step four exemplarily places will be selected and will be analysed with the method of action research more deeply, focussing on societal conflicts and effects of segregation. The concerted inclusion of users, agents of public administration and communal actors is a special characteristic of the analysis of the process of place-making and ¿construction. Classical methods of empirical social research will be combined with experimental methods. The research project aims at the generation of administrative and strategic recommendations for planning public places in Vienna in a way that stimulates integration.
