Critical evaluation of Austrian Fusarium spp. on their natural substrates

Fungal species of the genus Fusarium globally appear in all types of soil. They can either act as saprophytes or parasitically attack plants by destroying plant tissues. Various Fusarium species accompany their parasitic attack with the production of a series of toxins. Current strategies to estimate/avoid such damages are mainly based on the morphological and or molecular biological detection of Fusarium thereafter related to the detection and quantification of produced toxins. Such an approach is often biased by the lack of correlation between the identification on the species level and the toxin production, as this is strongly variable between different isolates of the same species. The goal of this project is to establish a detection method, which allows a quantification of the toxin production capacity of each isolate applying molecular biological tools. Obtained results will allow estimating the development of the different toxin producing Fusarium populations in Austria .
