Flow in recirprocating compressors

For the design of reciprocating compressors the knowledge of the interaction of the valve dynamics with the flow in the compression chamber turns out to be essential. Conventional models characterize the thermodynamic state of the gas with a quasi-static description. However, measurements revealed that predictions with such models are not accurate. When the pressure valve opens an expansion wave is initiated. The wave will be reflected on the opposing side of the compressor and in turn influence the valve dynamics. In case of "simple" compressors with only one suction and one pressure valve a quasi one-dimensional model is sufficient for the description of the wave propagation. In case of more complex compressors with more suction and pressure valve it turns out that a quasi two-dimensional flow model is necessary and sufficient. Comparisons with measurements at test compressors show a reasonable agreement of the new models. The ultimate goal of this project are simple to handle simulation tools for the desk of the design engineers.
