Ferialpraktikum-FFG-XRD-Korrosionsanalytik

01.07.2025 - 31.07.2025
Education and academia management project

Based on X-ray diffraction, corrosion product analyses are to be carried out on cultural artefacts, here on an icon from the 14th century. The icon is available as part of the “PHELETYPIA” research project, which was funded by Heritage Science Austria of the Austrian Academy of Sciences in the first funding cycle. In preparation for the measurements on the X-ray diffractometer, investigations are to be carried out at the Institute of Technical Chemistry using a 3D digital microscope to clarify the measuring points relevant for the X-ray analysis and the results are to be documented in the form of images and their descriptions. Subsequently, in collaboration with the head of research, who is also trained in metal conservation, parts of the icon will be prepared for measurements on the X-ray diffractometer. For this purpose, either samples are taken or parts of the icon are prepared for the measurements. In collaboration with the head of research, the samples are prepared for the measurements on the fully protective device and the measurements are carried out. The evaluations are carried out and documented under supervision. Finally, the results are presented in a lecture.

- Literature work on the methodology broken down to the student's level of knowledge under the guidance of the research supervisor; incorporation into the internship report

- Carrying out the 3D microscopy work on the object; image processing and evaluation of the results with subsequent presentation in the form of graphics and discussion of the results; incorporation into the internship report

- Preparation of the samples for X-ray analysis in cooperation with the research supervisor; sample setup on the device and carrying out the examinations using X-rays on the full protection device; evaluation of the results under supervision; summary of the results and incorporation into the internship report.
