Energy Optimization of Thermal Components for Rail Vehicles - Evaluation
01.10.2011 - 30.11.2013
Research funding project
Current situation: HVAC-devices contribute significantly to the overall energy consumption of rail vehicles in short-haul traffic. Hence, the optimization of the energy-efficiency of HVAC-devices has a large potential for CO2-savings. In the currently executed FFG-project ¿EcoTram¿ the fundamentals for reconstruction measures of an ULF operated by Wiener Linien are researched. Based on the results of this predecessor project (reconstruction measures, simulation model, energy balance) a non-commercial prototype of the ULF will be constructed and experimentally validated. Goals and contents: One of the main project goals is the experimental validation of the reconstruction measures defined in the predecessor project ¿EcoTram¿. The main measures can be structured in modifications of the vehicle, an innovative HVAC-device utilizing a heat pump and a model predictive control scheme. Further goals are measurements of the achieved energy savings in the climatic wind tunnel and in normal operation, the presentation of the realized savings for the ULF, as well as an assessment of all listed measures regarding new vehicle designs or the reconstruction of other vehicle types. To this end three parallel project phases will be implemented: (1) A reconstruction of the vehicle will be executed, where innovative and cost-efficient measures will be realized. (2) HVAC-devices will be completely redesigned utilizing a heat pump, variable-frequency control, and new control hard- and software. (3) The control concept will include an innovative model predictive control algorithm. After integrating all reconstruction measures in the prototype and successful operational tests the vehicle will be validated in the climatic wind tunnel and during normal passenger operation. Comparison with measurements from the ¿EcoTram¿ project will deliver clear and precise evidence of the achieved energy savings. Results: Main project results are considerable energy savings during operation (an estimated 30.000t to 60.000t CO2-aequivalent for Wiener Linien). Furthermore, all project partners will build up competency in innovative energy-efficient technologies which forms the basis for new and successful product developments. In this sense the prototype also represents the successful realization of innovative ideas for increasing the energy-efficiency and the attractiveness of public transport.
