TU Wien offers a multitude of activities at one of the university’s campuses (Open House, guided tours, Hands-On Lab, etc.). Rural schools, or schools in more remote cities, often do not have the means to participate in these STEM outreach programs, due to limitations in travel budget and distance. Therefore, we aim to bring the chemistry into their classrooms via experimental shows conducted by an experienced team (“Chemie on Tour”), followed by a relaxed Q&A sessions with faculty members of the Faculty of Technical Chemistry, TU Wien, and a student of TU Wien’s Technical Chemistry program. For senior high school students (age 16-18), we would like to ramp up our efforts even further: these visits are intended to becoming the opening step to engage senior high school students with the idea of studying at TU Wien by offering participation in a mentoring program. High schoolers who are interested may apply for the STEM-Mentoring Program and will be matched with TU student mentors. Numerous TU Wien students from the semesters 1-4 have already volunteered to becoming mentors of a high school student. The mentors will share their expertise about what it takes and what it means to study in the STEM field to the mentees, in order to allow for their well-informed decision. They will connect on social media, meet online, or even in person (funding required). We will try to connect high school students with graduates from that particular school. The mentors will be rewarded for their efforts with ECTS credits (concept already approved by the Dean of Study Affairs) as well as with didactic training and enrollment in TU Wien’s child protection policy. The mentoring program is also open for schools in Vienna and will be announced through teachers in our already existing database of “key schools,” offered at Open Houses, through online media, etc.
