Design and implementation of a test-bench for characterisation of burst-mode receivers for passive optical networks
01.12.2005 - 27.08.2009
Forschungsförderungsprojekt
Passive optical networks connect end-user, e.g. offices, via a passive optical star-coupler with a center. The end-users share the maximum transmittable data rate of the glass fiber connection, by time-division multiplex access. The receivers which were developed at the Institute of Electrical Measurements and Circuit Design fulfill the special requirements of the receiver in the center which has to deal with all incoming data signals of the end-user. These signals are differently attenuated due to the different length of the fiber between the end-users and the center. This leads to strongly different optical input powers at the receiver in the center. The receiver has to be switched for optimum handling of the incoming signal. The efficiency of the system increases the lesser bits are lost, which means that the switching has to be completed very fast. The simulated switching times of the receivers designed at the Institute of Electrical Measurements and Circuit Design are clearly faster compared to the literature, which has to be confirmed by measurements. Therefore a test-bench is designed and implemented.
