The project “Validation of new Sentinel satellite soil moisture dataset in the Western Tatra Mountains” aims to assess the accuracy and applicability of a newly developed soil moisture product derived from Sentinel satellite missions. Satellite-based soil moisture estimates will be compared with in-situ measurements from meteorological and hydrological stations located in the Western Tatra Mountains (Slovakia). The main objective is to evaluate the spatial and temporal reliability of the dataset under complex mountainous and climatic conditions. The results will contribute to improving hydrological modeling, drought monitoring, and water management decision-making in alpine regions.

The project is funded under the Austria–Slovakia Action Programme by the Austrian Federal Ministry for Women, Education and Research and the Slovak Ministry of Education, Science, Research and Sport, and runs from 1 August 2025 to 31 July 2026.
