Bulk Nanostructured Al profiles for applications at elevated temperatures

01.12.2007 - 31.12.2009
Research funding project
Potential service of high strength Al alloys at elevated temperatures cannot be fulfilled with commercial precipitation strenghtened Al alloys. This problem can be overcome by using rapidly solidiified (RS) strucutres of selected Al-based systems by the following features: siginificant increase of alloying elements in solid solution, grain refinement and formation of stable intermetallic phases. However, the necessary heat flow limits at least one dimension of the product. Therefore small particles or thin strips are produced, which have to be consolidated to achieve bulk materials. The consolidation process has to be developed to maintain the RS structure. To improve the workability, forming of extrusions and forgings at elevated temperatures is envisaged. The temperature stability and the mechanical properties at elevated temperatures have to be verified. MNT ERA-Net Transnational Call 2007, EU recommandation 4.4.2007
