BIM digitally signed with blockchain in the design phase

01.08.2019 - 31.10.2022
Research funding project

One of the answers to the lack of digitalisation are BIM (Building Information Modelling) workflows and software tools. They are evermore present in the planning phase. Nevertheless, integrated planning is still facing many difficulties, as BIM models are used by different stakeholders, however mostly isolated, whereas interdisciplinary design is still sequential and not transparent. BIM data exchange workflows furthermore reflect the traditional planning processes that have been present since the exchange of hand-drawn plans. To overcome these issues, support the innovation and achieve the full potential of BIM, it is necessary to create a business model which can support the synchronous seamless data exchange with BIM workflows.

The research project BIMd.sign is the design of a BIM-based planning with blockchain and smart contracts. The blockchain format and the integrated BIM framework are merged and the processes for the creation of smart contracts (blockchain) for BIM-based value chains are defined. In this way, the model-based communication of different stakeholders is made transparent, automated, providing a holistic BIM-blockchain solution for the planning phase (BIMd.sign-planning).
