Surface approximation with CAD standard surfaces has applications e.g. in reverse engineering of geometric shapes, where a point cloud or 3D triangulation representing a surface shall be approximated by a B-spline or NURBS surface. We are working on an approach that uses active B-spline curves and surfaces. In order to put more intelligence into the model the goal now is to extend the current algorithms to the full NURBS model which will make real use of the weights present in NURBS.
