B (UGoS) A User-focused Knowledge-base for Goal-oriented Municipal solid Waste Management in Uganda

20.08.2010 - 31.10.2012
Research funding project
The town of Busia in Eastern Uganda faces many challenges, including of a rapid shift in its solid waste management system: new technologies (composting, landfilling) will be introduced in 2010, while actual waste collection is still struggling to provide a hygienic environment to its inhabitants. This interdisciplinary research of Ugandan and Austrian researchers, local municipal authorities and NGOs aims to generate systematically and scientifically the knowledge which is necessary to manage solid wastes in a sound and economical manner. While the frame of the project is based on participatory action research, methods and tools applied are of social and technical science nature, including interviews, surveys, group discussions, material flow analysis, workshops, public presentations and discussions. The expected result is a user-oriented knowledge-base on solid waste which helps relevant stakeholders to improve its management so that the goals of waste management (protection of human health and environment, resource conservation) can be reached. The project is assumed to run over 15 months. Austrian and international partners are the Commission for Development Studies (KEF) at the Austrian Exchange Service (OEAD), the International Solid Waste Association (ISWA), and the Altstoff Recycling Austria (ARA).
