On the macro-level, an economy can be described as a system which is constantly producing entropy by converting materials of low entropy (raw materials) into consumer goods and ultimately wastes of high entropy. Therefore, entropy can serve as a potential indicator to describe the efficiency of resource use. Because a quantitative method for deriving such an indicator has not yet been developed, it is the aim of this project to extend the Statistical Entropy Analysis (SEA), developed at TU Wien, to explore the potential of statistical entropy for evaluating national raw material use by applying it to selected resource budgets. Finally, the outcomes of the research project will allow for evaluating the efficiency of resource use in an economy based on the combination of the developed entropy indicator and selected macro-economic indicators.
