In the course of the collection of used apparels a fraction arises which cannot be used (reselling or charitable donations for developing counties) and an expensive disposal is necessary. Due to that economic disadvantages arise and thus the project partner intends to carry out an investigation project together with a research partner that is experienced in that field. It is the aim of the project to develop a mechanical processing in order to reuse the material of these end-of-life textiles predominately in the field of construction materials. The processing chain covers disintegration and separation in order to be able to separate textile or fibrous from non-fibrous components. In a second step individual fibers are isolated. The fiber length has to be adapted to a desired value necessary for the subsequent application. The possible applications cover textiles or nonwovens as well as the use of short fibers for modifying viscosity of liquid or pasty materials. It is also within the scope of the project to reuse the separated non-fibrous components which may contain metal or plastics. Finally all fractions should be used for another cycle and waste must be avoided. The project contains investigation series using different aggregates in order to gain the data in terms of scientific, technical, economic and environmental questions necessary for designing a complete processing regime. Based on these data the most promising solution can be investigated in detail. The process must be dimensioned to work up all end-of-life textiles of the project partner increasing the economic position. It contrast to the state-of-the-art which includes thermal utilization of end-of-life apparels the new process intends to avoid any combustion. The process must be completely automatized without manually sorting of hard compounds as commonly used today. It seems, however, possible that in a medium term range similar end-of-life products from companies in the same industrial sector or even from other related fields con be processed.
