Al/Mg-Hotforming
01.05.2006 - 30.06.2008
Research funding project
Hydroforming provides the opportunity to produce complex shaped three-dimensional hollow structures, important for saving money in the automobile industry. Conventional hydroforming works at room temperature. By rising the working temperature, the limited workability of some alloys can be overcome. The higher deformation degrees realized by tempered hydroforming should enable new applications for hollow structures made of high-strength aluminium and magnesium alloys up to now realized in the automobile industry via conventional technologies and/or materials. Targets of the project are: - Selection of the alloys and investigation of their mechanical properties at elevated temperatures - Tribological investigations between the workpiece and the tool at elevated temperatures - FEM simulation using the experimental data - Trials at a hydroforming device designed for hot working - Mechanical characterization of the hydroformed material - Investigation of the joining characteristics - Production and testing of prototypes of a structural component.
