Ziele der Lehrveranstaltung

The aim of this exercise unit is to offer international Bachelor and Master students insights into how an interdisciplinary conference is prepared, realized and documented as conference organization as well as skills in matters of public relations are more and more a prerequisite skill in planning and design practice (offices), in NGOs as well as in academia and science.

Apart from engaging in organizational support of the international conference students in the course will also explore new ways of increasing outreach and engagement in the conference through the diverse possibilities of social media. How can we carry out live reporting on the conference as an important public dissemination tool in architecture and planning? How can we engage participants in further discussions on the contents through social media? In which new formats can we map the conference?

Inhalt der Lehrveranstaltung

This course relates to the International Conference ***Unsettled***Urban routines, temporalities and contestations, March 29-31, organized by the Interdisciplinary Centre for Urban Culture and Public Space at TU Wien. The conference is structured in three sessions, where international urban scholars will present their research in relation to the conference theme ensuing discussion and debate. The conference theme deals with unsettled conditions and conceptions of urban realities in the context of unsettled places, conditions, structures, actors, collectives, populations, routines, realms and situations of the city.

The internet redefined and unsettled public space and urban life. To share the discourse we engage in in the conference and to open up the academic discourse to an interested public beyond the conference venue, we aim to take advantage of new media for live reporting and documenting.

Apart from engaging in the conference organization (e.g. preparation, registration and catering, guidance of conference participants, by supporting the management, or similar), the course participants will be in charge of communications and outreach of the conferences formats and contents. Based on self-organization students will create ways of live-reporting and documentation through social media and other channels, through e.g. audiovisual formats, a live-blog etc. Through the support of the conference through different media formats we will 'map' the conference and deliver alternative perspectives on its contents and process.

Students will be requested to take part in the conference organization (e.g. preparation, registration and catering, guidance of conference participants, by supporting the management, or similar), its live reporting and its documentation (format open, responsibilities will be handled in teams, possibility to assist the professional filming of the conference), thus getting involved in very different steps of conference organization as an important format for spatial planning, architecture and urban studies.

We will get to know one another at the kick-off meeting and discuss which skills each person and group can contribute to the event. The course format is open to jointly develop ways of live reporting and documentation through social media and other channels and puts a strong emphasis on self-organization and personal interests. As organizing a successful conference is a team effort we look forward to motivated students joining our team.
