Ziele der Lehrveranstaltung

The magneto-optical trap (MOT) was set up to give advanced students some practical experiences in atom physics and get them in touch with real laboratory work.

There is no such thing as a ¿cooking recipe¿.

In each module, you are expected to develop the MOT one step further and reach a certain objective. Most of the time the objective, will be different from the preceding one.

You are expected to learn in a short time new technologies and equipment.

Some creativity will be necessary to find solutions for emerging problems.

Inhalt der Lehrveranstaltung

With resonant laser light, it is possible to cool down dilute ensembles of atoms below 1 Millikelvin in a magneto-optical trap. Nowadays, the MOT is the work horse in quantum optics with neutral atoms and the first major step to a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC).


 In this module, typically two students are working independently for one month full time at the a fully equipped experiment.     

A team of two has proven to be adequate for experiment and team work.

If you don¿t want or can work full time, the absolute length of the module can be extended.


The modules may involve the following topics:

  • vacuum physics
  • laser physics
  • laser cooling
  • optics
  • digital imaging
  • electronic process control
  • MATLAB programming

 Because the students are expected to work independently, the supervision will be always possible

Apart from your performance at the experiment, the documentation of the progress on the wiki and a final discussion of the results and problems, will contribute to the final mark.

But note:

But even if you missed or only partially reach an objective, knowledge, creativity and motivation will also be accounted for.

An der magneto-optischen Falle können maximal 2 Studenten arbeiten.

Es ist empfehlenswert sich 1 bis 2 Monate vorher anzumelden.
