Ziele der Lehrveranstaltung

This lecture will give an introduction into the basic physics of degenerate quantum systems and Bose-Einstein condensation. It will link standard knowledge in atomic physics, quantum mechanics, and statistics to on-going research in the field of quantum and atom optics. The student will learn to read and understand recent publications and get an overview on the field.

Inhalt der Lehrveranstaltung

Topics include: Thermodynamics of Bose and Fermi gases, atomic quantum gases; techniques to make and observe a BEC (Laser cooling, atom trapping, evaporative cooling) and degenerate Fermi gases, fundamentals of finite trapped degenerate quantum gases, non linear Schrödinger equation, fluctuations and correlations, 1d, 2d, 3d systems, excitations, solitons, vortices, superfuidity, ultra cold collisions, Feshbach resonances, molecular quantum gases, BEC-BCS cross over, strongly correlates systems, Bose Hubbard, Fermi Hubbard problems, fermionization of strongly interaction bosons in 1d, Tonks gas, Kosterlitz Thouless transition etc.

Leistungsnachweis

Seminar + Term paper.

The main aim of the lecture is to enable the students to understand on-going research and to read and understand recent articles. This will be demonstrated in short seminar talks (15 min) and a final term paper, summarizing a recent publication (max 3 pages).
