Training the skills to actively and creatively participate in the design and test of particle detectors in the lab. Preparation for a possible diploma or master’s thesis in this field. Overview of experimental methods for theoreticians.
After a basic introduction of experimental methods in Nuclear and Particle Physics, the essentials of electrical engineering are probed in the lab (active and passive components, amplifier, signal transmission, NIM and VME standards). Then, some exercises with detectors, e.g. Semiconductor Detectors, are made. The participants have the opportunity to get familiar with new equipments used at CERN for the CMS experiment at the LHC. Moreover, an introduction to the programming language LabView will be given to automatize manual lab measurements (including practical programming work).
As a concluding example using all the learned methods, an experimental setup will be designed to measure and analyze the lifetime of myons created by the cosmic radiation.
This course is based on practical experimental work and will be closely supervised by the lecturers.
