Aim of course

Architecture is social practice embodied in words and images. To realize a project, the architect will have to convince a great number of people about the virtues of a particular design. Unfortunately, in the course of their education, architects seldom acquire the skills to effectively communicate the core aspects of their projects to a broader public. Furthermore, in a recent revival of participatory planning practices and a conception of the practice affine to the user, exchange between cultures – that of the architect and the layman – is at issue.

Now communication is more important than ever. Although buildings are usually bound to a place, architects must assume positions in a global discourse and here representations of their ideas play an indispensable role. Many of today’s star architects have claimed their status entirely through their presence in the Internet before any of their radical designs have been realized.

Subject of course

This module examines different strategies of positioning architecture in the public eye. It extends its interest to the possibilities of communication, among architects, architects and other cultures and so forth. Issues discussed include journalism, exhibitions, manifestos, PR strategies, scholarly research, interpretive methods, and the social reception of architecture. In addition to three lecture courses, the module consists of a creative component in which the students will have to produce an academic paper, a piece of journalistic writing, or an exhibition concept that extends the discussions in one of the lecture areas.  The module is useful for anyone who wants to become an independent writer on architecture, a researcher, a journalist, a mediator, or a PR specialist in an office.
