After successful completion of the course, students are able to:
- Understand energy and mass conservation principles in the analysis of energy performance of buildings;
- Use of building simulation in design, operation, and retrofitting process of buildings and districts;
- Integrating HVAC, ventilation concepts and renewable systems
- Annual simulations, system selection and sizing, heating and cooling calculations, summer comfort calculations
- Understand differences between building and district scale simulation
- Obtaining and interpreting simulation results, parametric studies and optimization results
The course is structured into lectures, tutorials and a course project to improve sustainability, energy performance and CO2 emissions of buildings:
- Introduction to the building energy simulation tool Energy Plus
- Building Energy simulation with Rhino/Grasshopper and related tools
- Use of building simulation in design, operation, and retrofitting process of buildings and districts
- Climate based design
- Urban energy simulations
- Parametrics, sensitivity, uncertainty and optimization techniques
This course discusses the application of whole building simulation in the design, operation, and retrofitting process of buildings.
