Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to:

  • understand all relevant aspects of the sustainability concept in regard to buildings
  • develop concepts in regard to energy efficiency of buildings, material selection, indoor environmental quality and control, site planning to improve the sustainability of buildings
  • apply those concepts with the support of building energy simulation tools.

Subject of course

Relevant topics in regard to sustainability in buildings:

  • environmental sustainability,
  • energy efficiency,
  • renewable energy,
  • resource conservation,
  • thermal comfort, health and wellbeing,
  • climate based design and climate resilience
  • urban sustainability,

The course will provide the relevant theory behind those concepts and explain tools and methods how they can be assessed.

Teaching methods

Theory input and discussion of case studies, introduction to the simulation tool EnergyPlus
