Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to describe the essential interrelationships in settlement development and the corresponding spatial control options; to define the instruments of supra-local and local spatial planning and to identify the essential planning and decision-makers in settlement development as well as to explain requirements for participative planning processes; to contribute to current planning-related discussions (e. g. urban sprawl defence, building land mobilisation, climate change, natural hazard management, shopping centres).

Subject of course

Introduction to spatial planning (basic functions of existence as object of spatial planning); tasks of spatial planning (basic features of historical development); spatial conditions and development trends (population and settlement development, economic development, traffic and transport, landscape and natural resources).  Challenges to spatial planning today (regional and national competitiveness, social diversity and solidarity, climate change, adaptation and resource efficiency, cooperative action structures); planning system in Austria (planning levels, competences and instruments).

Teaching methods

Explanation of relevant planning regulations, especially constitutional regulations, legal and administrative goals, instruments and procedures.

Examination modalities

Written online exam

The exams will take place ONLINE until further notice. The exam is written in TUWEL, the exam supervision takes place in a ZOOM meeting running simultaneously. Detailed information about the exam procedures as well as access information for the supervision room in ZOOM will be sent to you via TISS news prior to the exam.

FAQ online exams

What do I need for the online exam?
You need a stable internet connection, a primary device equipped with a webcam and a working microphone (laptop or smartphone), a second device with keyboard and screen (for taking the exam) and your TU Vienna student ID.

What does the exam mode look like?
The exam consists of three open-ended questions that can be answered either by keyboard input or handwritten.

When and how do I get the details on the exam procedure?
You will receive the access link to the meeting room in ZOOM as well as all information about the procedure via TISS news the day before the exam.

How do I get access to the TUWEL course if I am registered for the exam but not for the course?
You will be added to the TUWEL course immediately after the registration deadline. Please refer to the exam registration page for the registration deadline.

Am I allowed to use any other resources during the exam?
No, the exam is not an open book exam.

Is the exam recorded?
No.

Special regulation: On-site exam

Based on the Rectorate's Regulations on Measures for Attendance at Classroom Courses and Examinations in the Summer Semester 2021, on-site exams will be possible from 18. May 2021, subject to compliance with special safety precautions. On-site exams are explicitly labelled in TISS under "Exams".

FAQ On-site exams

Do I have to provide a negative Corona test to take an on-site exam?
Yes. Students must present a valid, officially recognized, negative Covid-19 test result (digitally or in paper form) in combination with their student ID upon entering the buildings at all four main locations (Freihaus, Getreidemarkt, Gußhaus, Karlsplatz). If no such test result can be presented, participation in on-site exams will be denied.

Which Corona tests are accepted?
Results of an officially recognized PCR test, PCR self-tests from "Alles gurgelt", an official test lane or an authorized pharmacist/physician are accepted. The negative result of an antigen test must not be older than 48 hours, the evidence of a PCR test must not be older than 72 hours. The result is valid from the time of sample collection. 

Do I also have to provide a negative test result if I am vaccinated?
Yes. A vaccination certificate is currently not accepted for exam participation.

Which safety and hygiene measures must be taken?
Students participating in on-site exams must wear an FFP2  mask that they have brought with them at all times from entering until leaving the TU building (except during the exam). Upon entry, hand disinfection and registration via QR code (contact tracing) are required. A distance of at least two meters must be maintained at all times.

Do I also have to wear an FFP2 mask while taking the exam?
No, the mask is not required while taking the exam.
