After successful completion of the course, students are able to...
• to identify societal factors of building sciences and environment from gender and diversity perspectives.
• to critically relate intersectional gender and diversity issues to building sciences.
• to provide examples of the “gender data gap” and its consequences for planning and construction.
• to view technical developments in the context of the social organization of building sciences and environment and to identify potential weaknesses of research & development designs and development processes in general.
• to apply a heightened sensitivity for gender and intersectional biases in planning and construction.
In the lecture series, various experts will present examples and approaches to gender and diversity in the building sciences and environment in regard to their specific topics.
General background and content of the lecture series:
• Introduction to Gender Studies and Feminist Theories: Concepts and why they are relevant to building sciences and environment.
• Questioning the notions of objectivity and neutrality in technology and science.
• Concepts of New Materialisms/Posthumanism: Beyond the nature/culture, human/non-human, body/mind dichotomies.
• Explanation of terms: sex, gender, diversity, intersectionality, inclusion
• Where does the data come from? About the "gender data gap" and other biases.
• Who plans and builds and for/with whom?
• Concepts and examples of Gender planning

As a lecture, the course is open to all interested students (not only from the Master of Building Sciences and Environment). The lecture can be credited as a transferable skills course both in the transferable skills catalog for architecture and in that of TU Wien.

Certificate Gender and Diversity Competence
This course may be taken as elective courses for the Gender and Diversity Competency Supplemental Certificate. More information about the certificate can be found here.
With the certificate Gender and Diversity Competence, graduates prove their competence in the consideration of gender and diversity aspects.
Prerequisite for the issuance of the certificate is the completion of courses from the following list in the amount of at least 16 ECTS.
Three courses amounting to 7 ECTS must be completed; for the remaining 9 ECTS, all courses from the list "Optional Courses" can be chosen.
